The President of the Slovak Republic, Peter Pellegrini, today visited the company Jadrová a vyraďovacia spoločnosť a.s. (JAVYS) in Jaslovské Bohunice, where he learned about the company’s activities in the field of decommissioning of nuclear facilities, management of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel, as well as with the upcoming development projects in nuclear energy.
During the visit, the President held a working meeting with the management of the company and its subsidiaries Jadrová energetická spoločnosť, a.s. (JESS) and Newvys a.s., which deal with the preparation of the deployment of a large-scale nuclear power plant at the Jaslovské Bohunice site and the development and preparation of the implementation of advanced modular reactors using spent nuclear fuel from currently operated nuclear power plants in the Slovak Republic, respectively. The expert discussion was followed by a tour of selected facilities in the area. The President’s delegation visited the Interim Spent Fuel Storage, where spent nuclear fuel from the operation of nuclear power plants in the Slovak Republic is stored, and selected areas of the V1 nuclear power plant being decommissioned, where one of the most important nuclear decommissioning projects in Europe is currently underway.
“Today, JAVYS and its subsidiaries have exceptionally experienced people on-board and projects important for the future of Slovakia being developed. I consider it important that this experience is maintained and developed in Slovakia in the future. Not only because of the next year or two, but because of the future that awaits us in ten or twenty years,” said the President of the Slovak Republic, Peter Pellegrini, at a press conference in the turbine hall of the V1 nuclear power plant.
“Today, JAVYS is a company that not only securely closes Slovakia’s nuclear past, but also actively participates in shaping its energy future. Our experience in the decommissioning and management of radioactive materials allows us to be a partner in new projects that are of strategic importance for Slovakia,” said Peter Gerhart, Chairman of the Board of Directors of JAVYS.
JAVYS is a 100% state-owned company that provides the so-called back end of nuclear fuel cycle in Slovakia. Its main activities are the decommissioning of the A1 and V1 nuclear power plants, the processing and disposal of radioactive waste, including the operation of the National Radioactive Waste Repository in Mochovce, and the safe management of spent nuclear fuel.
At the same time, the company is developing its activities in the field of new nuclear projects through subsidiaries. Through Newvys, it participates in the preparation of advanced modular reactors, which represent a promising solution for safe and low-emission electricity production and enable more efficient use of spent nuclear fuel.
Ondrej Uhrík, General Director of Newvys, informed the President about Newvys’ intentions: “The reactors we are developing in collaboration with newcleo work on the basis of fast neutrons and use of liquid lead coolant. This technology is particularly groundbreaking in the field of spent fuel management, as it allows for its efficient recycling. In addition to the environmental benefits, the project is of strategic importance for strengthening the country’s energy self-sufficiency,” said Ondrej Uhrík.
